Read the rules from cover to cover last night (not difficult only 30ish pages, not including squad types). Clearly an alpha version. Rough and ready and in need of polish. Even so the system seems easy to pick up but will require tactical acumen (I could really be in trouble here!). I'll post a longer, more in depth breakdown a little bit later but suffice to say I like the system from an initial read. It all makes sense (which is good) and the relevant rules are in the relevant places.

Here is the boardgame geek review:

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/85949/relics

and the promo video:

I'll bring a copy of the rules along tonight for Dan as well as my copy, anyone with a passing interest can have a look if they want :D

Unit stats:
Each unit has statistics, for example the basic Britanan trooper unit has the following profile:

Trooper Company ‐ 6pts per model
Squad
Min/Max models: 6 ‐ 9
Move Combat Ranged Defence Damage Morale
4 ---------2-------2/15--------0-----------1---------7

Doll:
This unit is not living.

Unreliable 3:
Prior to making a ranged attack, roll a d6 for each model involved in the attack. If the result is ‘3’ or greater, the model may make the ranged attack. If the result is a ‘1’ or ‘2’, the model is unable to attack his activation.
If the unit is a squad and making gang up attacks, or shooting at different units, declare these actions and which models are performing which actions before rolling for each different group of models and appl the results to that group.

Combat overview:

The way hits/damage is worked out is the same for melee and ranged combat (with the following proviso: models in melee can only attack/damage models they are in btb contact with.

A model rolls a number of dice equal to it's combat/ranged value, so a trooper in melee would roll 2 dice (ranged it would roll 2 (the 15 is the range in inches)) +/- modifiers. These include, for example, defence (which for a trooper is 0). If a double is rolled then a point of damage is scored. This obviously would kill a trooper model. Simple, however it would be different if the trooper was fighting, say an Orcnarr Unmann

Unmann ‐ 14pts per model
Squad
Min/Max models: 3 ‐ 6

Move Combat Ranged Defence Damage Morale
----5-----3 ------0---------1---------1--------7

Ferocious:
When making a Combat roll, the player may reroll 1 die from the attack roll. The second result stands and a die may only be rerolled once.
When making a gang up attack, the Ferocious value used is that of the main attacking model.

Fluid units:
If two or more unactivated units of this profile are within coherency when one activates, the player may merge the units into one unit as long as the total number of models in the newly created unit does not exceed tis profiles maximum allowed models per unit.
This new unit activates and acts normally from that point onwards.

The first thing to notice is that the Unmann has a defence of 1. This reduces the troopers melee dice to 1 (2-1=1) meaning that you would never be able to get a double. 2 game mechanics effect this: The first one is that if the roll is reduced to less than 2 dice then you still roll 2 dice but ignore any double 1s or 2s. The second is ganging up (which I'm just going to blatantly copy from the rules):

Gang Up Attack
Instead the player may split a unit up to make Gang Up attacks. The active player nominates one model as their main attacking model and up to two additional models from the active unit that re eligible to take part in the attack. The player works out how many d6 they get as normal for the first model, then add an additional d6 to the total for each additional mini taking part in the ‘Gang Up’ attack.

This number of d6 is then modified by the target model’s Defence value
This way, the player can increase the number of dice rolled whilst only needing to worry about the enemy’s Defence once.

A model cannot take part in more than one ‘Gang Up’ attack per activation and there can never be more than three miniatures involved in a single ‘Gang Up’ attack.

So to use our trooper vs Unmann example the trooper (assuming he has 2 mates to help) would get 4 dice - the 1 for the Unmanns defence meaning he would roll 3 dice.

Simple, no?

Right, planning to do a plog with these fellas (which i'll put here before final pics go in the gallery):

So first pictures of the blister packs I got, the 2 starters were prizes and the orcnar Beorn and Britanan Arcanum Gaurd (which i forked out cold hard paypal for!):

Image

Here are pictures of the orcnar starter contents (weighed lots!):

and the 3 units contained:

unmann:

Docga:

Eotan Rifan:

And a group shot:

Also the Beorn:

Miniatures didn't need a lot of cleaning, some mold lines but no flash. However there are some big gaps (see the back of the beorn for example:

Image

I'll have to dig out the green stuff :( Hey-ho, I've built GW monsters in the past so gaps aren't that much of a problem, it's the sculpting of detail in said gaps that gets me.

All in all nice models, I'll probably regret not pinning them (But I'm lazy). From memory it's a 200ish point army there. I've started putting the Britanan together but pictures aren't taken (yet)
